STONE
Stone is a concreted earthy or mineral matter. Stone is a small piece of rock. Rocks are considerably larger than stones. Stone can be used to decorate a building, walls and etc. Stone can also crushed and sorted into various sizes to become aggregate and use in concrete, coated with bitumen to make asphalt or used "dry" as bulk fill in construction. Besides that, limestone is mixed with clay or sandstone before firing, it can produce Portland cement which when mixed with aggregate makes concrete. There are many types of stone such as sedimentary stone, limestone, sandstone, fossilstone, marble, granite and others type of stone.
Manufactured Stones and stones designs
Sedimentary stone
Sedimentary stone came from organic elements such as glaciers, river, wind, ocean and plants. Tiny sedimentary pieces broke off from these elements and accumulated to form rock beds. They were bonded through millions of years of heat and pressure.
Limestone
Limestone mainly consists of calcite. It has a smooth granular surface. It is more likely to stain than marble. Limestone is known to contain lime from sea water.
Sandstone
Sandstone is a very durable formation of quartz grains. Usually formed in light brown or red colour.
Fossilstone
Fossilstone considered a limestone that contain natural fossils such as sea shells and plants.
Marble
Marble is a recrystallized limestone that formed when the limestone softened from heat and pressure and recrystallized into marble where mineral changes occurred. The main consistency is calcium and dolomite.
Granite
Granite contains very little calcite. It is very hard material and easier to maintain than marble. there are different types of granite depending on the percentage mix of guartz, mica and feldspar. Black granite is known as an Anorthosite.
The Different Forms in Which Stones are used
The construction industry uses stones in the following forms:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Fieldstone – rough stones obtained from river beds and fields.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Rubble – irregular quarried fragments that have at least one good face.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Dimension stone- quarried and cut into rectangle form.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Cut stone- quarried and cut into large slabs.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Ashlar – small rectangular blocks.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Flagstone – thin slabs of stone; either regular or irregular shape, used for flooring and paving.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Crushed stone – useful in site work as freely draining fill material, pavings, surfacing materials and aggregates.
